Introducing AP Cybersecurity & Personal Finance

The landscape of high school education is evolving, and the College Board’s new AP Career Kickstart program represents a change in their approach: preparing students for both career and collegiate success. With the exciting launch of two new courses, AP Business Principles/Personal Finance and AP Cybersecurity, this initiative blends academic rigor with professional-ready skills.

The program kicks off with AP Business Principles/Personal Finance and AP Cybersecurity. Both courses are designed to address high-demand career fields while maintaining the academic standards of AP. The program not only introduces new AP courses, but also new skills students should develop, such as cross-functional team collaboration and engagement with learning a new subject to only name a few.

Aligning with National Standards

This reflects an initiative College Board has been continuing in the past decade: blending college-preparedness courses with a direct-to-career approach. In fact, these two new courses will be associated with industry partners and follow the standards of nationally developed frameworks.

The business AP course will emphasize those from the National Standards for Personal Financial Education, while Cybersecurity will follow the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education Workforce Framework. If students pass the AP Cybersecurity exam, they can even receive a free voucher for the CompTIA Security+ certification exam, motivating them to pursue a career in IT security. That’s not the only new AP course, though!

AP Business with Personal Finance

AP Business with Personal Finance will immerse students in prominent topics such as marketing, entrepreneurship, finance, and accounting, offering a diverse approach to business studies.  Through hands-on case studies and project-based learning, students can apply practical knowledge, whether they plan to start their own business or pursue a career in the workplace.

The addition of this course to AP is especially significant, as personal finance issues continue to trend among teenagers, allowing educators and college faculty to ensure high schoolers are poised to enter college with adequate financial preparation and knowledge.

The course will encapsulate five important skills: Concept Application, Entrepreneurship, Decision-Making, Communication, and Collaboration. With high schoolers indicating their interest in exploring their careers, College Board harmonizes these five skills to empower students to become pioneers in whatever field they want to pursue.

AP Cybersecurity

The demand for secure networks and encryption has only risen in the past decade with the advent of AI and hacking. In one of the world’s most budding markets, Cybersecurity also tackles a critical skill gap. This course provides students with grounded fundamentals, preparing them for a field that offers not only solid career paths but also great earning potential.

Individuals who pursue Cybersecurity as a career can earn north of $400,000 and can lead some of the top tech companies, which are more focus-driven on data encryption and security. With these ideas in mind, College Board has taken an initiative to introduce AP Cybersecurity, which could easily rise to become one of the more prominent AP exams in the near future.

Industry Applications

Before the official 2026 launch, select high schools will pilot these new AP courses during the 2025-2026 school year. The beta testing phase will help refine the curriculum and ensure that these courses are ready for full launch.

These innovative AP courses represent more than curriculum updates—they’re strategic responses to evolving workforce demands and economic realities. By integrating industry certifications, real-world applications, and direct pathways to high-paying careers, students gain significant competitive advantages in both college admissions and professional placement.

This dual-purpose approach positions graduates as versatile candidates equipped with theoretical knowledge and practical skills, making them uniquely prepared for tomorrow’s complex challenges and opportunities.
